How Fount of Life BeganIn April 1985 the WELS Colorado Mission Board decided the time was right to open another congregation in Colorado Springs. After calls were extended to several pastors, the Lord led Pastor Wayne Vogt to accept a call here on October 25, 1985. His call was to reach out to the many unchurched people in the eastern area of Colorado Springs.
In February 1986, the new pastor began meeting people door to door. He canvassed over 1000 homes in the next year, and many of the people he met soon became core members of the new church: Fount of Life. The church’s first worship service was held on March 22, 1987, in a shopping center at 5709 Constitution Ave. 96 people attended that first service. The same year, over 150 people heard Pastor Vogt proclaim Christ’s resurrection at the church’s first Easter service.
Regular Sunday School began that fall, and the church soon knew it needed more space. Because of a real estate boom, the mission board decided to grant the new congregation authority to purchase land earlier than normal. The congregation purchased an existing church and 4 acres of land from another congregation in November 1988. Fount of Life’s members allowed the other church to stay in the building until the Constitution lease ran out, and Fount took occupancy of what is its current building in November 1990. After a month’s renovations, Fount of Life began worshipping in the new building (appropriately) around Thanksgiving of that year.
Over the next 10 years, more than 100 people were baptized in the growing church. Pastor Vogt had the privilege of confirming 12 young Christians into membership, joining 21 couples in marriage, and comforting families of those whom the Lord called to glory. He touched so many lives through his ministry, authored and taught the tailor-made Searching Scriptures classes, and eagerly carried God’s word in many areas new to the WELS.
In August 2000, Pastor Vogt retired. Fount of Life called Pastor Wayne Uhlhorn who, after prayerful consideration, accepted the call and was installed on Sunday, January 21, 2001. Pastor Uhlhorn jumped quickly into his ministry here, expanding the congregation’s focus of ministering to families. Fount of Life’s first Vacation Bible School was richly blessed in June 2001, when over 80 children learned about Jesus. The Christian ensemble, Revelation, enthusiastically lent a helping hand, teaching the kids with music and fun, and ending the week with an uplifting concert of praise.
From initial concept through the present day, Fount of Life Lutheran Church has grown from a small mission outreach into a thriving ministry to Colorado Springs’ families. God has richly blessed this small congregation in its short history, and we look forward to joyfully serving the Lord in the many good years to come.
